Have you ever been asked to write on a topic you know nothing about? Welcome to the club, that is my life almost every day. Having worked as a freelance writer for over 6 years now, clients always assume that I have the ability to write on any topic.
I have worked on various topics that I know nothing about, I have written about cat food and I do not own a cat. I have written an article on the credit tax system in America. I haven’t left Nigeria before. I have done a guitar review and I do not even own a guitar!
How was I able to produce high-quality content writing on topics I knew nothing about? Well, that is the secret I am about to share with you. And I will present this in a list form, which is my favorite way of writing stuff, so it is easy for you to grab.
Stay Calm, Don’t Be Scared
Most times when people are faced with a topic they know nothing about, they get scared and this makes it look as though the topic in question is a herculean task. I felt that way too the day a client told me to write a guide on How to Select the Best Life Insurance Package. The client lived in the United States and wanted me to write as I lived there. It was a scary prospect because I did not stay in the United States and I knew nothing about life insurance. But I just had to calm down and get to work.
Research The Topic
When you want to write a topic you know nothing about, research is inevitable. In fact, as a freelance writer, I spend so much time researching and reading about different things, so I can understand and write about them. We know that research is important, but the main thing is how to research correctly. For some lazy writers, research means to find an article that looks similar to what they want and changes the words. This is not researched, it’s plagiarism and it’s wrong.
The internet is filled with so much information about any topic. Both professionals and newbies have an opinion on everything. Anybody can run a blog these days. So when you are researching make sure you are getting information from experts in the field. Look out for people who have a reputation in that field and get knowledge from them. Do not use “upcoming” blogs or websites, they may have knowledge or expertise but we cannot be sure they are giving accurate information because they have no reputation.
Here is what most people do, they find one source that has all they need and just settle there. Limiting yourself to one source will do you no good, it will make your article look like a spin-off of your source. It will not be original and your work will not be well-rounded. Look for multiple expert sources, draw ideas from them and create your own masterpiece.
Research takes time, do not just rush it to get it over with. Even before I wrote this article I did research, I am not writing from my head. I read other articles, saw what other expert writers thought, even before I started working on mine. Rushing will end up making you produce a low-quality article and that is not what you want.
After you have considered multiple sources and understood the topic, you can now settle down and write on the topic. You will see yourself flowing effortlessly that is if you actually took the time to research. Write your first draft, do not be worried if it is perfect or not, just write it. It’s your first draft, it will not be that good. My first draft is usually not good at all.
Take A Break
After you finish your first draft, take a break. This helps to clear your mind and allows you to do other things apart from writing. It allows your brain to take in fresh air so that when you come back to look at what you wrote, you will be looking at it with new eyes. This will help you make the right adjustments.
Edit/Rewrite The Work
When you get back from your break, maybe a day or two depending on how long you have, you can now edit your work. Fact-check it, make sure everything is accurate. Remove excess baggage and produce your final piece.
After that last step, you can give it to a friend to read and critique or another writer to help you look at it. That is how you can write on any topic at all. It does not matter if you know anything about it or not. Follow the steps above and you will be fine. Easy right?
