I’ve seen some scenario where a man was telling an elderly woman whose money was stolen from her bank that the reason the hackers were able to have access to her money was that she gives her account number out too much and someone might have used it to steal money from her account, I have also been in a group discussion where some boys were listing out what is needed to steal money from anyone’s bank, and someone mentioned account number and everybody there agreed that all a hacker need is your account number to steal money from your account.

Those two scenarios are very laughable, as much as I want to laugh to stupor, I can’t help but pity the woman in the first story her wailing increased maybe because it was true, maybe she gives her account number out too much, whatever it was, I noticed her wailing increased.

I’m simply put it straight, so you’ll understand why some perceived too important information (to hackers) is not important. I’ll also be listing all A hacker Needs to Steal Money From Your Bank in Nigeria and I will be discreet about it, this informations if exposed, can be vulnerable.

What is Hacking?

Before really going into deeper explanations on the things needed by a hacker to be able to steal money from your bank account, we will take a glimpse of what hacking is all about. According to Malwarebytes

Hacking refers to activities that seek to compromise digital devices, such as computers, smartphones, tablets, and even entire networks.

“Hacking has evolved from teenage mischief into a billion-dollar growth business.”

One thing you should note is that; hacking is a wide field. It has grown from teenage mischief a situation where a kid tries to change the functions of an app to suit his or her desire different from what the main programmer programmed it for. Hackers are hacking into banks stealing lots of money without traces.

Like I mentioned earlier, as the world technology keeps advancing so, are loopholes created, all we can do is be very careful with how we share and keep our pieces of information, that said, I can boldly tell you 50% of bank theft that happens to people in Nigeria are been perpetrated by individuals close to them, which is some times inevitable.

Debit card details

According to Investopedia

A debit card is a payment card that deducts money directly from a consumer’s account to pay for a purchase. Debit cards eliminate the need to carry cash or physical checks to make purchases directly from your savings. Also, debit cards called “check cards,” offer the convenience of credit cards and many of the same consumer protections when issued by major payment processors such as Visa or Mastercard.

The card can be used by the hacker or scammer to fund online wallets and then make a purchase with the wallet.

Wondering how this is done? It’s simpler than you think. The debit card explained above can be used to make payment online all you have to do is input the card number, card expiry date, CVV (which is usually at the back of the card) and most time card bearers name, a code called OTP (One Time Password) will be send to the phone number used in registering the debit card, this is a security measure taken to prevent the unauthorized transaction, unfortunately, they are some wallet that is specially programmed to complete transactions without the said OTP.

An example of a Debit card below

Prevention: The only way to prevent such occurrence is to disable online transaction with the card, to do this, simply visit your issuing bank and tell the customer care what you want to do and it will be done for you.

Unfortunately for an online enthusiast like me who makes a lot of purchases online, it could be hard, I derived a means here, is it.

I have two bank account, The one I use in making transactions online I don’t put money on it, I make a transfer from the other account into the online transaction allowed card and make payment. Simple right?

BVN (Bank Verification Number)

The Bank Verification Number commonly called BVN is a biometric identification system implemented by the Central Bank of Nigeria to curb or cut illegal banking transactions in Nigeria. It is a modern security measure in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 1958 to reduce fraud in the banking system.

Like you’ve read, the sole aim of introducing BVN is to cub illegal transactions in Nigeria. As much as I agreed with the fact that it has helped the government fight against single workers in multiple jobs, it births a loophole for hackers and scammers to withdraw and steal money from careless or ignorant Nigerians.

They are various ways one can withdraw money from your account using BVN which I won’t mention for security reasons. But bear it at the back of your mind that if you’re careless about your BVN and it gets to the wrong hands it won’t be a pleasant experience.

Mobile Phone Number

This seems funny but true, your money can be stolen if the mobile-phone number used in registering with your bank gets to the wrong hands.

Wondering how this happens? Let me tell you a story.

2 years ago I needed a new mobile number for personal use, I strolled down and got one from a nearby agent got it registered in my name and other necessary documentation, I went home with my supposed new sim, I inserted it in my phone, as usual, I got a welcome message by my service provider the message that followed was a shocker, bank credit alert story for another day.

Do you know I could perform a transaction with the said sim if I wished? It’s not complicated.

Always do well do get back you mobile line through Welcome back a service every network provider offers, if you can’t do a Welcome back for any reason, you can always visit your bank to update your mobile number.

Nigeria is still a developing country with lots of loopholes in its systems, in other to save guard your hard-earned money, you’ll have to be practically careful with the above information and others you think are important.

Like I have said earlier, 50% of fraud cases recorded in Nigeria are perpetrated by close individuals who might have close contact with their victims.
